En un comunicado, All Nippon Airways explicó: «Durante el vuelo, la tripulación de cabina se enteró que uno de los pasajeros abordó por error el vuelo incorrecto y se lo informaron al Capitán. Como parte de los procedimientos de seguridad de la aerolínea, el piloto al mando decidió regresar al aeropuerto de origen, donde el pasajero desembarcó. Estamos investigando la situación para determinar como es que el pasajero abordó el vuelo.»
Según reportes, el pasajero tenía un boleto para vuelo UA32 de United Airlines a Narita, que despega en un horario similar al de ANA; además, en ese vuelo, existe el código compartido, lo que pudo haber causado la confusión.
El vuelo despegó nuevamente a las 3 de la mañana del día de hoy y estima llegar al aeropuerto de Narita en Tokio a las 6:14 a.m.

El vuelo NH175 de All Nippon Airways, entre Los Angeles y Tokio Narita, operado con un Boeing 777-300ER, matrícula JA732A regresó a Los Angeles luego de que, de acuerdo con el Departamento de Policía de Los Angeles, se descubrió a una persona no autorizada a bordo.
Christine Teigen, una pasajera de dicho vuelo, narró en su cuenta de Twitter lo sucedido:

Aparentemente se trató de una confusión y a bordo del vuelo de la aerolínea japonesa se encontró a un pasajero con un boleto de United a otro destino. El vuelo aterrizó de forma segura en Los Angeles 8 horas después de haber despegado del mismo lugar; el vuelo se reprogramará para el día de mañana.
